Make 2011 Your Year To Eat Simply And Clean

The New Year has just begun and for some people, the new diet resolutions they made have already gone by the wayside. Here's my 2011 mantra: Resolve not to start on another diet this year! Coming from a nutrition professional, I know this sounds counterintuitive, but I have some very good reasons for saying this.

Diets, as we know them in the traditional sense, (i.e. caloric or food restrictions) simply do not work. Being successful at weight loss is never about placing unsustainable restrictions on you. If you have been on various diets in the past, remember that you were most likely unable to stick with the plan for very long, and once you stopped the plan, you regained the weight. If you just came across a "new" diet plan to try, and think this will finally be the one that works, think again. It's very hard to stop giving into the dieting mindset altogether, but I encourage you rethink your ideas about weight loss and approach this difficult task in a new way.

Keep your eating clean: Clean eating is not a diet but more a way of life. It is based on the idea that the best way to eat is to abundantly enjoy whole foods. Whole foods are as close to their natural state as you can get them. In other words, the processing of the food is minimal. Clean eating calls for eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins instead of pre-packaged, processed foods or fast food. Saturated fats are replaced with the healthy fats found in foods such as nuts, seeds, and olive oil.

Fruits & Vegetables: Choose fresh produce over canned fruits and vegetables or juices.

Use Whole Grains over Processed Grains: Brown rice, quinoa, bulgur, barley, or whole grain bread are just a few examples of how you can incorporate more whole grains. Limit use of refined grains as much as possible. A clue that a grain product has been refined or processed is when "enriched" flour is listed as a prominent ingredient.

Eat lean meats, fish or poultry. Don't forget to include legumes (beans and lentils) as an alternative source of protein. Legumes are a wonderful, often overlooked whole food with lots of possibilities. Try having meatless meals using legumes as a protein source 2 or 3 times weekly.

Replace sweetened beverages with water: Drinking water instead of soda or bottled iced tea has the potential to save a great many calories as well as reduce your overall sugar intake.

Trade bad fats for good fats: Sticking with lean protein sources and limiting fast food are the quickest ways to get saturated fat out of your life. Moderate amounts of nuts or seeds are a good way to include healthy fats.

Don't call this a diet: Stop thinking of how you eat as a diet! Instead, change your mindset and make a healthy eating plan your goal. Incorporating the simple, clean eating principles listed above can help you get closer to this ideal. Besides losing the extra calories, additives, fat and sodium that come with processed foods, your way of life becomes a bit greener too! The clean foods come without lots of packaging! Finding clean foods requires a simple sweep around the perimeter of your grocery store or a visit to your local farmers market.

Need some help with this? Learn From a Nutrition Professional: Changing eating habits is often easier said than done. One way to find strategies that will work for you is to discuss your goals with a nutrition professional. Choose someone with the expertise to point you in the right direction. A Registered Dietitian (RD) has the skills to help you develop healthy eating and lifestyle goals, and can teach you strategies for reaching those goals.

Keeping it clean and simple is a much easier way to tackle the business of weight control. You will feel better, look better, and actually be able to eat an abundance of healthy foods. By following the tips outlined here, you can start to celebrate the benefits and success that come with healthy eating. That's much better than another year of abandoned New Year's resolutions!

What is the Number One Way to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain - Without Deprivation?

SLOW DOWN. Yes, I know you've heard it many times, stress is the precursor behind so many diseases - some would even say that it is the cause of all disease. But did you know that stress; even small amounts of chronic low level stress can stop digestion all-together, and in effect slow down your metabolism?

Here is how it works. In the moments of stress, heart rate speeds up, blood pressure increases, respiration quickens, hormones such as adrenalin are released and blood flow is routed away from the midsection and into the arms and legs - which allows you to run away. The sympathetic nervous system which is in charge of this stress fighting response is also in charge of shutting down your digestive system. It does not matter whether you are eating a plate of greens or a hamburger - the food will just sit in your stomach like a brick until minutes or hours later when the body kicks back into normal digestive functioning. Regularly slowing down digestion in this way also slows down metabolism.

Think of every time you've run out of the house with your breakfast in hand, or scarfed down your salad in front of your computer. Did you ever feel like the food just sat in your stomach or caused fatigue? We've all been there. The most poignant example in my life is one about pizza. I can easily enjoy a few slices of pizza with my friends in a relaxed restaurant on a Friday night and still have plenty of energy to party for a couple of hours after the meal. But when I eat a slice of pizza on the run, it seems to take more time and energy to completely digest my meal. Even at 4:00, I feel heavy and sleepy. Has this ever happened to you?

Burn more calories while you relax. I just met with a college student who had just returned from a semester abroad in Italy. Though she made no changes to her diet, she shed fifteen pounds on the trip. Her only explanation was "I was just happier there." She had significantly reduced her mental and emotional stress.

Not only does stress prevent proper digestion, but it also increases cortisol production in the body. Cortisol is one of the hormones responsible for signaling the body to store fat and not build muscle.

So this holiday season take a few minutes to slow down and take deep breaths before any piece of food crosses your lips. Be aware of how quickly you are eating and take an extra five minutes at your meals. Chew your food and relish every morsel. Avoid the mental stress of guilt and shame that we all have around holiday treats. Allow your body to digest and relax and you just may get through the holiday season without having to loosen your pants.

What You Need To Do To Get Your Body Burning Fat Again

For the last 20-30 years we have all been bombarded with a vast array of diets and diet plans. Every you turn you see them "Lose 30 pounds in 20 days" "Thin thighs in 8 minutes a day" or "Fast weight loss guaranteed". It is little wonder that we get sucked into these programs with promises like that. After all losing excess fat weight is important with two thirds of us being overweight.

But our bodies can only take so much of this sort of treatment and at some point will stop responding to these diet programs. It is called a plateau but it is really your body saying 'enough already' and it takes steps to protect itself from the stress you are putting on it.

If you are guilty of overstressing your body with restrictive diets and excessive long duration exercise you have actually been damaging your metabolism (your body's engine) along with speeding up the aging process. Once you reach this point further weight loss becomes impossible and you start risking your overall health by trying.

Part of what has happened is that your body's hormones will be 'out of whack' and you will need to go through a sort of healing process before you can reclaim your slim healthy body. What you need to do in this transition is restore a healthy metabolism, improve your body composition (muscle/fat ratio) re-balance your hormones and achieve improved health. In other words you have to get healthy to lose weight.

Your body will not release its fat stores while under stress - whether it is from not eating correctly, lack of physical movement, or not enough restorative sleep so you can only be in this transition when you have set about improving your exercise, nutrition and lifestyle habits. You may not wish to do this but the trade off is you will need to get very used to being overweight as that is what the outcome will be and will stay that way for as long as your carry this mindset.

When you embark of your transition process by improving your habits your body will respond by rebalancing its hormones that had become inefficient from previous poor habits. The more damage to your metabolic motor the longer it will take to fix.

Firstly you need to put in place a proper strength training exercise program so your body composition can be made healthy again. Only rebuilding and re-toning your muscle tissue will increase the metabolic rate so you burn more fuel (calories). Be aware that only strength training exercise can do this - no amount of long duration, single mode, low intensity activity can do it...not anytime soon...not ever.

Support this program and to create plenty of energy so you can put some effort into your exercise sessions ditch as much processed foods from your life as possible,. Replace with natural whole foods that you cook from scratch. While you are eating refined and processed foods you can forget about losing weight as your hormones will continue to be thrown out of balance with the chemicals and additives they contain. Eating these foods will not take an overweight body and change it into a strong healthy one.

Think of this journey as your new part time job. Like any new job new skills will be needed and these may include developing higher motivation levels along with learning how to eat better and get your 2-3 proper exercise sessions done each week.

Instead of getting wages you will be getting something way more precious that no amount of money can buy - your brand new strong, slim, healthy body.

Why Most People Fail at Weight Loss

In today's society there is an increasingly high number of people who are becoming overweight and even obese. Obesity not only lowers an individual's self esteem but can also lead to a wide variety of health problems. If you are overweight and are considering losing weight than know that you are making a great decision that could end up saving your life. Also know that your journey to weight loss will not be an easy one. Many people who attempt to lose weight fail. There are, however, several things you can do to prevent yourself from becoming one of these failing statistics. Here are a few of the reasons that people often fail at weight loss and things that you can do to ensure that you succeed!

The main reason that many people fail to lose weight is because they do not fully understand the risks that are associated with being obese. Many people understand that being overweight is unhealthy, but many don't understand, and don't take the time to understand, why. In fact, if you ask most people why they are interested in losing weight, they will not say to benefit their health at all. Instead, they will state that they want to look and feel better about themselves. Of course, looking better is a huge benefit of losing weight but it should definitely not be the only reason that you want to lose it. The main reason for losing weight should be to regain your health. Being overweight increases your risk of developing a wide variety of serious medical conditions, including heart disease and stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and certain types of cancer. If you are serious about losing weight, learn the facts. Understanding the seriousness of obesity will give you the motivation you need to continue on in your weight loss journey.

Many people also fail at losing weight because they do not commit themselves to permanent lifestyle changes. When most people think of a diet, they think of it as a short term thing. It is something that, once the weight is lost, they can end. The truth is, a diet may help you lose the weight but if you want to keep it off, you will have to continue eating healthy and exercising permanently. It is also important to know that overnight success story diets result in failure and are extremely bad for you health. Many overnight diets result in failure because they restrict your food intake so much that you are no longer doing anything that you enjoy. If you are not enjoying yourself, you are unlikely to continue your diet. Also, diets that severely restrict your food intake can result in a whole different variety of health problems. If you are looking for a good diet, make gradual lifestyle choices that you can stick to. Do not cut everything that you enjoy out of your diet at once, or you will be bound to fail. Gradually remove unhealthy foods, replacing them with healthy foods. Also exercise gradually. Do not begin by working out two hours a day if your body is not used to it. Instead, begin by taking a 20 minute walk each day, gradually increasing your exercise load as you become used to it.

If you are considering losing weight, make sure you do it in a healthy way that will not only help you lose weight but also help you keep it off. Do your research to understand why losing weight is so important so that you can keep your motivation levels high and gradually ease into all diet and lifestyle changes so that you do not become a failing statistic.
